Valparaiso Bound!

Book launched in Valparaiso

Valparaiso Bound! was launched at a well-attended event in Viña del Mar, Chile, on Wednesday 5 October, 2016. Hosted by the Instituto Chileno Británico de Cultura, the meeting and subsequent reception was attended by H.M. Ambassador to Chile, Fiona Clouder, and Katherine Hutter, the new Director of the British Council in Chile, as well as the British consul in Valparaiso, Iain Hardy. ICBC President, Paul Maxwell, gave an enthusiastic welcoming address and was followed by the Ambassador who stressed the need for a better understanding of the historic European associations with Valparaiso, and with Chile more generally. The author, David Woods, offered remarks about his motivations in writing the book – not least, that tourists visiting Chile had almost nothing substantial available in English if they wished to know about the historic sites they visited in some depth. However, the main presentation of the book was made by Vice-Admiral (Ret.) Kenneth Pugh, who is Chairman of the Fundación Cultural Puerto Patrimonial in Valparaiso. Mr. Pugh has worked with extraordinary energy on various projects to resurrect the city from its long, sad decline, especially all aspects of its historical legacy. His enthusiasm was evident to all. He rounded off his talk with a film and recording of seamen singing one of the most famous sea shanties dedicated to Valparaiso – “Paddy lay back!”. Other guests included Admiral Cristián Ramos Pérez of the Chilean navy and the book’s publisher, Guillermo Burgos Cuthbert.
